Assessment

The new National Curriculum was introduced in September 2014.

Teaching Staff and Subject Leaders at Petersfield continue to work hard to ensure our children continue to have the all round education & learning experiences which we pride ourselves on, whilst meeting the demands of the new requirements.

Instrumental in this is Assessment. We strongly believe that assessment provides information to improve teaching and learning.

As well as the new Curriculum, the Government has changed the way schools report children’s progress. At Petersfield, in line with Government policy, we have moved away from levels. Teachers are now assess children against a set of expectations for the end of each year group. Staff use a variety of classroom methods to measure progress and attainment. Please read our Assessment policy (or summary leaflet) for more information.

Previously, we worked in levels and this information was reported to you at the end of each academic year. Specific levels were considered benchmarks for each year group e.g. at the end of Year 2, children were expected to be a 2b and at the end of year 6 National Expectation with a level 4b.

National Expectation is that pupils should be secure in their Age Related (Year groups) expectation by the end of the school year. Progress through the expectations is defined as 'Emerging, Developing, Secure'. This information is reported to parents throughout the year through Teacher consultation evenings and an annual report. It will detail if your child is below, at or above the National Age Related Expectations.

ARE Leaflets

Below are 7 leaflets which explain what the end of year Age Related Expectations (ARE) are for reading, writing and maths for each year group. As part of our creative curriculum, staff have collaborated and devised progression grids setting out the expectation of knowledge and skills across each of the foundation subjects. The foundation subjects are Religious Education (RE), science, art and design, computing, Design and Technology (DT), geography, history, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), music, Physical Education (PE) and Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE). These will be added to the website soon.

At Autumn term Teacher Consultations, during Parents' Evenings, parents are offered a ten minute slot to discuss their child’s progress and attainment.

Teachers will record 'developing', 'usually', or 'almost always' against the expected learning behaviours:

  • Understanding and follows the school rules
  • Manages and expressed his/her own feelings well
  • Listens attentively
  • Is not easily distracted
  • Works well independently
  • Works well with other children
  • Takes responsibility for personal learning
  • Tries his/her best
  • Keeps trying even when tasks are difficult
  • Presents work carefully
  • Uses previous knowledge when learning
  • Homework is completed to his/her ability

Attendance will be identified as:

100% Expected
Below 96% - this needs to improve as this impacts on learning
Below 92% - this must improve as this has a high impact on learning

Pupil effort will be identified as ‘developing’, ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.

Next steps will be identified for reading, writing and maths.

Staff, pupils and parents will be asked to contribute to this record of pupil progress.

Additional key points from the discussions you have will be noted on the record and you will be asked to sign this. A copy will be sent home.

Progress

At the October Teacher Consultations, the report will indicate where pupils are on track to meet the ARE or where additional support is being provided. The Spring Parents’ Evening and the summer report contain information about your child’s attainment and progress. Pupil progress is measured from the previous summer’s attainment of AREs and will be discussed with parents/carers at consultations.

Formal Assessments

Early Years: Teachers use a combination of the Early Years profile and the new baseline assessment to measure pupil progress. The profile will provide valuable information against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) and the characteristics of their learning. Children are expected to achieve a Good Level of Development (GLD) by the end of the year, and this involves meeting expectations in personal, social and emotional development; communication & language, and physical development; as well as requirements in reading, writing & maths.

Year 1: Pupils have a Phonics Check during the Summer Term. This will indicate if children have met the required standard.

Year 2 and Year 6: Children will be formally tested and sit a number of papers covering grammar, punctuation and spelling; reading and comprehension and maths and problem solving.

Meeting the needs of all pupils

In line with the new Government provision for pupils with SEN, pupils who were formally Statemented (now an Education and Health Care Plan) and those who were School Action Plus - i.e. accessing the support of outside agencies - will continue to have Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) formally an Individual Education Plans (IEP). The needs of pupils who were formally ‘School Action’ are now planned and monitored through the school Provision Map which identifies the support being provided for all pupils with a need for this.

During the first half of the Autumn term, Mrs Penrose (Assessment Lead & SENDCo) and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) met with all classteachers who drew up the School Provision Map which details the specific needs of pupils and the support provided. This planned additional support can be discussed at Teacher Consultation meetings. Should parents require more time to do this, they can see the class teacher informally on the playground or arrange an appointment through the school office.

During the Autumn term, parents of pupils who are accessing the support of external agencies to support their education will be invited to a PLP meeting to review the previous PLP and discuss the new PLP.

21st Jun - Monday is an INSET day. This means school is closed to pupils, parents and visitors. Staff will be busy working and in meetings all day. We look forward to seeing everyone in school on Tuesday 22nd.

18th June - Thanks to all the dad who joined us for our 'Father and Male Carers Day' celebration. The children's messages were heartfelt and we hope you enjoyed hearing these as much as the children enjoyed sharing them.

14th June - Good luck to our year 5 mathematicians representing Petersfield virtually in the County 'Year 5 Maths Challenge' this afternoon!

11th June - Thank you to Wimpole Hall for the donation of the sports equipment received today. The children look forward to using this at break and lunchtimes.

10th Jun - Thank you to the parents who joined us to celebrate the awarding of our Headteacher Awards, the Hollands' Cup and a Mathletics gold certificate.

10th Jun - Well done to our piano pupils who begun this term's piano exams today! We've enjoyed hearing you playing in school and are sure you will have done well.

7th Jun - Well done everyone! The new playtime rota and spacings worked well today.

28th May - Today we talked about staying safe and E-Safety as we discussed positive pupil reactions to events that can make us feel unsafe. Parents, you should also have received an email update about this.

27th May - Thank you to parents and teachers alike for attending the second of this week's Parents' Evenings. This opportunity to celebrate successes, have a pastoral 'check in' and discuss next steps is so important in our home-school partnership.

27th May - What a super celebration of your learning and what you are proud of Pine Class! Thank you to all the relatives who joined to share this virtual assembly with us.

25th May - Thank you to all the parents who joined us virtually for our Parent-Teacher consultations this evening.

24th May - On our Understanding Christianity Day, the children said 'We really enjoyed retelling the story of creation through Lego. It was nice to be creative with our learning and also share our learning.'

20th May - In our Headteacher Collective Worship we celebrated our pupils who are now published writers. Following the 'Wander in the Woods' story writing, certificates and the published book were handed out.

19th May - Today was National Numeracy Day! Pine class reported they took part by 'Doing problem solving all morning. We had to make 'unmagic' squares, where all the rows, diagonals and columns must add up to different amounts. It sounds easy, but it was challenging!'

19th May - It was fantastic to see our KS2 pupils taking part in the golf session yesterday. It was great to see so many children trying golf for the first time.

13th May - Thanks to Yew Class for leading today's Collective Worship. It was great to hear about the learning taking place in class this term. Thank you to the parents who were able to join us.

7th May - We were delighted to share our first story with our September 2021 EYFS pupils today as we started the transition from preschool to primary school. It was great to hear how much you enjoyed listening to it.

6th May - Ash Class Assembly was well worth the wait today! What a super showcase of just some of your super learning this term Ash class! Thanks to everyone who enjoyed it with us.
